Week of January 9

Thank you to all the parents and family that joined in our Christmas party fun before the break. We
had a blast and enjoyed fellowship over food, games and challenges. A special thank you for those who donated extra money to cover those who were unable to pay. I greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity!

I had an amazing Christmas vacation traveling to South and North Carolina to visit with friends and family. I was blessed by some amazing friends who flew me out to SC and provided a car to travel to visit everyone. While I hated that my uncle was in the hospital a couple days, it was wonderful to be a part of the support system in helping him through the health difficulties he was experiencing. I got to meet my new 5 month old niece Grace and fell in love with her. I felt the sad disappointment of Clemson loosing their chance at the National Championship, but so enjoyed the company of many friends and family that I quickly forgot about the loss. It was so wonderful to get home to my furry boys, get some rest and prepare for 2018.

The beginning of 2018 gives us the opportunity of a clean fresh slate. I'm excited to dive into the learning process and continue an amazing year in 3rd grade. We've learned a lot this year, but we have many more academic adventures to take on. Are you with me? Let's go!

This week in...

Math ~

We continue our learning of fractions, specifically representing equivalent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 using objects, pictorial models, and number lines.

I would love for your to use these two presentation below to help review fractions with your child to reinforce the learning they are receiving each day as well as their learning prior to Christmas break.

Student Learning Goals:
  • build models of equivalent fractions using objects, pictorial models and number lines
  • communicate the thinking behind how various models were developed
  • determine incorrect thinking on various problems and how to correct that thinking.
  • Click here for sample problems of what your child will be doing in school (sample below).
 Unit on Understanding Fractions

Science ~

Student Learning Goals:
  • describe and illustrate the Sun as a star composed of gases that provide light and heat energy for the water cycle.
  • clearly communicate and support the thinking for these concepts:
    • What is the composition of the Sun?
    • What type of energy does the Sun produce?
    • What role does the Sun play in the water cycle?

Remember for the future ~

  • NO SCHOOL, Monday January 15 ~ Martin Luther King Day
  • The next two weeks, students will be completing winter MAP testing. Please encourage your child to do his/her best to reflect their growth as a 3rd grader!
